Art therapy uses creative expression as the main form of communication, supported by conversation with a trained art therapist. It helps reduce distress and supports social, emotional, and mental wellbeing by fostering insight, self-compassion, and a stronger sense of agency and self-worth.
Art therapy is suitable for people of all ages and life stages, including those affected by illness, disability, or challenging personal or cultural experiences. Through art-making, people are supported to express complex or difficult thoughts and feelings, including those linked to trauma or experiences that may be hard to put into words. No artistic skill is needed.
In the UK, art therapist and art psychotherapist are protected titles by UK law. All practising art therapists must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and their details can be checked on the HCPC register.
